Keeping Cool
As Summer is upon us and we enjoy longer, warmer days it’s easy to forget that, for some, the heat can be a real problem. Higher temperatures and humidity can easily cause heat-related illness, particularly as we get older. There are however, some very simple steps that we can take to help alleviate any problems.
- Drink plenty of cool drinks such as water or soft drinks, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Try to avoid hot drinks such as tea and coffee, excess alcohol or drinks that are high in sugar.
- Ensure that you eat a balanced diet to help replace any salts lost through sweating.
- Keep your windows shut and close the curtains to provide shade when the weather is at its hottest, especially if the sun is shining directly into a room. Open the windows later in the day when it is cooler. Find the coolest room in your house and spend your time in there.
- Wear loose, light-coloured clothing and if you have to go out ensure that you wear a hat and sunglasses.
- Taking cool baths or showers and splashing yourself with water throughout the day will help you stay cool. A cool flannel over your wrists and back of your neck will feel wonderful and help cool you down.
- Hand held fans can also be really useful.
- Try and stay indoors when the sun is at its hottest, between 11am and 3pm.
- Avoid any strenuous activity, even housework if the weather is really hot.
By following these simple steps and planning ahead you can still enjoy the summer and ensure that you stay safe.
Remember keep cool, keep in and you will keep safe.
