Travelling Tips for the Elderly

Didn’t we have a lovely day, the day we went to Bangor?

As our loved ones get older, sometimes it can seem that their world shrinks. They can become nervous of leaving their familiar surroundings and what used to be a simple day out becomes a huge undertaking that can fill both them and you with anxiety. However, by following these practical steps it is possible to have a lovely day out that is safe and enjoyable for all.

Plan Ahead

Firstly, make sure that you do your research and plan ahead. Plan the day around your loved one’s interests, abilities and involve them in preparing for the trip.

Make sure the venue is suitable for the elderly. How accessible is it? How much walking is involved? Is there wheelchair access? Is there parking nearby? Are there adequate toilet facilities? Take the weather into account and ensure that you have the appropriate clothing.

Don’t forget to take:

  • A map of the venue or local area
  • Tickets
  • Money
  • Blue badge
  • Radar key for disabled toilets
  • Food and drink
  • Medication
  • Suitable footwear
  • Camera
  • Mobile phone with emergency numbers programmed in

Local parks, indoor shopping centres or the seaside with a beautiful promenade are all trips that can provide a feeling of independence and freedom. However, if your loved one is anxious at the prospect of a day out, start small and local.

Stay Calm

On the big day try and take things in your stride. By staying calm, patient and keeping your sense of humour the day is more likely to be a success. Even though you may spend the day being vigilant and on the lookout for potential hazards and problems, the benefits for your loved ones will far outweigh the disadvantages.

Be Flexible

Ensure that you build in plenty of flexibility to your day, so that if things start to go wrong you can always change your plans. Remember it doesn’t matter if things don’t go quite to plan, don’t be afraid to come home. Most importantly, don’t push you can always try again next week!

Whilst it may feel like a huge amount of work to organise a day out for your loved one, remember that even the smallest change of scenery can make such a huge difference.
